Attention Teens (and Parents) - Do you know a teen aged 13-18 who dreams of being independent one day? Or maybe YOU hope they’ll figure out how to manage money before they ask you for $20 again? Well, we’ve got the PERFECT opportunity for them!
💰 The "On My Own Financial Simulator" program, originally scheduled for TODAY, has been moved to NEXT MONTH - and it's worth the wait!
This isn’t your average “lecture about money” – it’s a hands-on, budgeting game where teens will face budgeting decisions about what it’s REALLY like to adult. Presented by the UT Institute of Agriculture, in partnership with your local Library, they'll learn how to manage money like a pro (or at least not run out before payday)!
Registration is required, but lucky you, now you have more time.
A final schedule will be shared on both the Library and Town pages with details for the new March date - so be sure to have them RESERVE their spot. Let’s face it, they’re going to need these skills one day, because "winging it" doesn't work long-term.

Got a green thumb but no place to grow? Check out the Arlington Community Garden in Forrest Street Park. The Garden opens on March 15th, so start your planning now.
Applications for our 4'x8' beds will be accepted starting March 1st.
For more information visit: www.townofarlington.org/page/community-garden

REMINDER - Town facilities are CLOSED next Monday in observance of the Presidents' Day holiday (17th)
*This is NOT a trash service holiday - so collection routes will run on regular schedule.

Sweeping all of Town usually takes around 5-7 days. As always, major intersections and Town parking lots will be swept at night to limit interruptions.

Arlington said congratulations and farewell to Assistant Chief James McMillen on Friday. Chief McMillen retired with 41 years in the fire service, including the last 19 years faithfully serving the Town of Arlington. He was the Town's first Assistant Fire Chief and fulfilled that role for most of his time here.
We wish Chief McMillen the best in retirement and thank him for his years of service that touched and impacted so many lives here. Enjoy your well-earned retirement sir!

Have you done a FREE online search to see if the State of TN has missing money for you? You could be missing out. 1 in 10 Americans have unclaimed property just waiting to be claimed.
It's easy to find out. Simply go to the State website, search by your name, and even submit claims online. https://unclaimedproperty.tn.gov/app/claim-search

If you've stepped outside today, you've noticed temps are dropping. Our area is expected to see temperatures drop and remain below freezing for several days (Sunday, January 19th to Wednesday, January 22nd). The Town encourages residents to take steps now to ensure you're prepared for this extended cold.
Contact numbers are attached to help you respond in case of a burst pipe or other emergency.
MLGW says they are prepared for this round of severe weather as well. A News Release to explain their preparation and provide utility tips for customers is available online - https://www.mlgw.com/news/news_j25weatherprep_2

Don't Forget - You can sleep in on Monday instead of running the cans to the curb. January 20th is a trash service holiday. All Town trash & recycle collections will be pushed forward 1 day next week (Tues-Sat).

UPDATE: The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has identified one of the vehicles that vandalized at least two separate Town parks last weekend. Those responsible will be made to pay restitution for the time and materials needed to repair the damage.

Motorized vehicles are not permitted on Town parks and fields without prior consent.
Arlington is blessed with multiple parks and play fields that transform into winter wonderlands during snow. We love to see residents enjoying them.
However, over the past weekend several people with ATVs, UTVs and even trucks decided to join in the fun. These outings may be exciting, but beyond risking personal injury, it is vandalism. It causes real damage to our parks which is costly and takes time to repair. This impacts their future use by other residents. Please remember to keep these snowy stunts on your private property in the future.
And if you see something, please say something. Misconduct and vandalism in our parks should be reported to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office at their non-emergency line (901) 379-7625
Help us keep our parks safe, beautiful and play ready for everyone.

UPDATE: As of 10:00 this morning, Arlington has received around 6 inches of snow, with additional expected over the next few hours.
Public Works crews have been working diligently throughout the night and morning to treat and clear roads. Roads are turning to slush in some areas and plows are making some headway, but conditions remain hazardous. We urge everyone to stay home if possible and avoid unnecessary travel.
Lows tonight will turn wet roads icy. Staff will be salting again to try to lessen impacts.
Your safety is our priority, so please stay safe and take all necessary precautions during the winter storm.

No doubt you've seen forecasts for snow heading our way Thursday night (1/09) into Friday (1/10). Rest assured, Arlington staff have been busy preparing for the winter weather.
To help ensure the safety of residents and maintain accessibility, Public Works has all our heavy equipment fueled, checked, and ready to go as needed. They have also checked and loaded the Town salt trucks to ensure they are ready for deployment.
STRATEGY - Staff is prepared to come in at midnight tonight to begin salting trouble spots, intersections, hills, bridges, etc, according to Terry Perkins, Public Works Director. Our two plows, which are smaller than the large State vehicles, have limited capacity but will begin to plow primary Town routes as soon as we start to get any accumulation on roads or bridges. They anticipate a continual plowing of Town streets during the event.
TOWN FACILITIES - The Parks Department will assist in clearing Town facilities and walkways so essential services remain accessible. However, Town Hall, the Library & Senior Center will be closed Friday and Saturday.
TRASH SERVICE - Trash will not run on Friday. Service will resume on Monday with Monday's normal route. Waste Pro plans to catch up on any missed locations from earlier this week by the end of today.
TOWN PARKS - Get out and safely enjoy the weather, but please keep all motorized vehicles off park properties and athletic fields to avoid damaging the turf and irrigations lines underneath. Also, be aware that public restrooms will be closed starting this afternoon through the weekend.
AFTER-HOURS emergency numbers for the Town will be monitored for urgent needs:
- Public Works/Parks after-hours: 901- 568-4259
- Wastewater after-hours: 901-229-1965
- Senior Center: 901-501-1241
- For utility issues, call MLGW's 24-hour utility emergency line: 901-528-4465
Please stay safe and continue to follow any updates on our Facebook page and on the website at www.townofarlington.org/live-feed

TRASH DELAY - If you have Monday trash service, we understand you may have been missed yesterday. A Waste Pro truck went down and they are working to repair it. Please leave cans at the street, as they will collect them as soon as possible.

Our area is facing two rounds of freezing weather in the next week. On Sunday, January 5th, rain and gusty winds may be followed by a flash freeze overnight, as temps fall from the 50s down to the 20s. Then mid to late next week, bitter cold temperatures are possible.
Take steps now to ensure you're prepared when cold weather hits. Some tips & contact numbers are attached to help you protect your water pipes and respond in case of a burst pipe.
In addition, MLGW has also sent a News Release to ensure customers they are taking steps to prepare - https://www.mlgw.com/news/news_1225prep.
