Since opening in 2007, the Arlington Wastewater Treatment Plant has worked to treat the town’s wastewater safely and responsibly. In 2024, the Town completed Phase 1 of plant improvements using funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARP). Phase 2 is now in the design and engineering stage.

Phase 2 focuses on three key upgrades:

• Adding a third treatment tank (Sequencing Batch Reactor, or SBR). These tanks clean wastewater by mixing it with air and beneficial microorganisms that remove impurities before the water is safely discharged. A third tank will provide backup capacity and allow one tank to be taken offline for maintenance without reducing treatment performance.

• Upgrading the ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system. After wastewater is treated, it goes through a UV disinfection process that uses light to neutralize bacteria and other harmful organisms before the water is released. The current UV equipment has been in operation since the plant opened in 2007. Replacing it ensures the plant continues to meet modern environmental standards and reliably protect downstream waterways.

• Adding a sludge dewatering station. Sludge is a natural byproduct of wastewater treatment. The new station will remove excess water from sludge, reducing reliance on the existing on-site lagoon and providing a more efficient long-term solution.

These improvements help ensure the plant can continue protecting public health, supporting growth, and meeting environmental requirements for years to come.
